What changed

As of September 4, 2026, a temporary public policy allows some foreign workers with a valid work permit to study in a program lasting six months or less without obtaining a study permit.

Important conditions

The authorization lasts only while the work permit remains valid, or until the short program ends, whichever comes first. Applying to extend a work permit does not by itself preserve eligibility to study under this policy after the existing permit expires.

What to check

Confirm that your work permit and program meet the official conditions. Full-time study can also affect whether work experience gained during that period counts toward the Canadian Experience Class or Canadian work-experience points under Express Entry.
